Hawken Blog #6

It is currently June 7th and the end of our senior project is fast approaching. As always, since last post every day has been packed full of activities and jobs to do. Since the last post David and I have mainly been working on the kiosk and also funding for stocking. The day after the last blog post our Orvis equipment came in so David and I were super excited about that. Due to the Perkins family generous donation, David and I were able to purchase 1000 dollars of Orvis equipment with a 60% off discount. We spent this money on 8 Orvis Clearwater Combos and some flies. We received 8 clearwater combos which are high end fly fishing rods. We also made these rods heavier (8wt) in strength so that they will last a while. The reels came pre spooled with fly line so all we had to do is tie on the micro-swivels and leader/tippet. They are currently all ready to use and today a fishing club member actually used them to catch multiple fish for his biology study. It is great to see our rods in use and benefiting members of the Hawken community. In between our other endeavors David and I found time to prep the other previously previously purchased rods. We were able to spool all of the rods with our 40lb braided line and attach lures, hooks, and swivels on the end for easy "plug and play" fishing. While working on our Kiosk it was great to see Mr. D bring out his daughters and teach them to use our brand new fishing equipment. We hope to see many other Hawken families put our equipment to use like this. Furthermore, some of my friends and I were able to get out and catch catch fish on our brand new carp rods. We will soon implement a checkout system so that people can "rent" out the rods, but in the meantime it was great to see that everything functioned well as expected.
Finally, I wanted to mention that the past couple of days were filled with a lot of politics once again. The goal this time was to get the stocking money. Unfortunately the Business office required W-9 forms so it took a while to figure that out, however due to Mr. Tate's and our perseverance we were able to make everything work so big shout out to him. We were just recently able to secure the checks so David and I are planning to pickup and stock the fish tomorrow. I also wanted to mention that for our presentation, Mr. Tate had the best idea yet - to bring two hoops and say that "these are the hoops we had to jump through to make all of this happen." So creative and so true!

  1. Ah, the hoops! But you persevered and got things done in your adulting (and fishing) project. It was so fun to watch the stocking yesterday, although I'm still not convinced that the pond can hold that many fish...

  2. Also - pictures don't seem to be working. Can you re-upload them?
